Vastu Shastra and Contemporary Architecture: What Actually Translates

Almost every residential brief we receive in North India carries a vastu requirement. Some clients state it first. Some mention it apologetically at the end. A few say it does not matter to them and then ask, three months later, what the pandit thought.

The profession's usual responses are both unhelpful. One is to dismiss it. The other is to comply mechanically, moving a kitchen to a corner that does not work and calling the problem solved.

There is a more useful position, and it starts by separating what vastu is actually saying.

The part that is building science

A large share of classical vastu prescription is climate response for the North Indian plain, encoded in a form that could survive without drawings.

North-east for water, light and the morning. In the northern hemisphere at this latitude, north light is diffuse and consistent, and the early-morning east sun is low, gentle and brief. Placing the most-used living spaces and the water source toward the north-east is orientation advice that any contemporary architect would give from a sun path diagram.

South-west for mass and storage. The south-west takes the harshest afternoon load. Putting heavy mass, storage and the master bedroom there, spaces that are either unoccupied in the afternoon or benefit from thermal mass, is exactly what passive design would recommend. The prescription and the physics agree.

Kitchen to the south-east. Morning light for a space used at dawn, and the heat source placed away from the cooler, more-occupied north-east. Before mechanical ventilation, this mattered a great deal.

The central open space, the brahmasthan. A courtyard at the centre of a plan is the single most effective passive cooling device available in a hot dry climate. It drives stack ventilation, provides shaded outdoor space, and brings light into a deep plan without heat gain. This is not folklore. This is the reason the courtyard house persisted across the region for centuries.

Openings to the north and east, restraint to the west. Straightforward solar gain management.

Read this way, a substantial part of vastu is a climate manual for a specific latitude, written for builders who worked without instruments and needed rules that could be remembered and transmitted.

The part that is convention

Other prescriptions do not have a physical basis, and it is more honest to say so than to invent one.

Directional rules for a staircase's rotation. Prohibitions on particular room adjacencies. Rules about which corner a main door must occupy irrespective of which way the street runs. Proportional systems tied to numerical schemes rather than to structure or use.

These are cultural conventions. That does not make them worthless, a convention held by a client, a family and a community has real weight, and a house that makes its occupants uneasy has failed at something architecture is supposed to do. But it is a different kind of requirement from a thermal one, and treating the two as identical is what produces bad buildings.

Where the conflict actually arises

The problem is almost never vastu itself. It is vastu applied to a site that does not face the way the prescription assumes.

Classical vastu was written for a freestanding building on an open plot with a choice of orientation. Most contemporary Indian sites offer no such choice. A 200-square-yard plot in a Delhi colony with a single street edge to the south has one entrance position available, and it is the wrong one.

At that point three things can happen.

The plan can be distorted to satisfy the rule, producing a kitchen with no ventilation, a bedroom facing the afternoon sun, or a corridor that exists only to move a door. This is the common outcome and it is the worst one, because it sacrifices the physical benefit to preserve the symbolic form.

The rule can be dismissed, leaving the client uneasy in their own house for thirty years.

Or the underlying intent can be satisfied by other means, which is what we would argue for.

Working with the intent rather than the letter

If the site cannot give the north-east its light, the plan can. A light well, a double-height slot, a stepped section, a clerestory. If the south-west cannot take the mass, the envelope can take the load, deeper shading, a cavity wall, a service buffer along the western edge.

If the entrance must sit in an inauspicious quadrant because the road does, the threshold sequence can be designed so that the sense of arrival happens elsewhere: an entry court, a turn, a change of level. Vastu is substantially concerned with the experience of approach and threshold. That experience is designable and it does not depend on a compass bearing.

The practical method we use is simple. Ask the client's consultant to state the non-negotiables, usually there are three or four, not thirty. Resolve those literally. Then satisfy the remainder in intent, and show the client how. Almost every brief resolves this way, and the resulting house is better than either mechanical compliance or flat refusal would have produced.

The honest position

Vastu is not a science and it does not need to be defended as one. Parts of it are excellent climate design for this region, arrived at empirically over a very long period and preserved in the only format available at the time. Parts of it are convention, and convention held sincerely is a legitimate design input.

What is not legitimate is letting a symbolic rule produce a room nobody can use. The building has to work. Within that constraint, there is far more room to accommodate a vastu brief than most architects admit and most consultants are asked for.
